Nearly 40 million Americans to Wager on the NFL during League's 100th Season

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4, 2019/ PRNewswire/ - Thirty-eight million American adults-15 percent of the U.S. adult population-are preparation to bet on National Football League (NFL) video games this season, according to a new study by the American Gaming Association (AGA).

The fast expansion of legal sports betting has offered increased opportunity for countless Americans to wager securely with a licensed, regulated sportsbook. This year, 7 million Americans state they will bet lawfully at a casino sportsbook, 1.2 million more than last year, and 10s of millions of others will position bets with pals, take part in pools or squares contests or position their bets online.

" During this centennial NFL season, more Americans than ever before can wager on football in safe, well-regulated environments," said Bill Miller, AGA's president and ceo. "It is clear that as jurisdictions enact policies to provide a legal alternative to the dangerous illegal market, consumers follow fit and look for the defenses they are worthy of."

The study, conducted by Morning Consult, likewise found that almost one-in-four (24%) American grownups state they would place a bet on the NFL if it was legal in their state. As legal sports betting continues to expand, fan engagement with NFL video games will see an effect:

- 39 percent of avid NFL fans plan to place a bet on the NFL this season.
- 75 percent of NFL bettors say they are most likely to watch a game they bet on.
- 28 percent are most likely to attend a game they have actually banked on.
- 51 percent are more most likely to enjoy pregame shows and commentary.
- 63 percent are most likely to collect with good friends or family to view a video game.
" Sports wagering clearly effects fans' interest for engaging with the NFL. As the legal market grows, it is important for gaming and surrounding markets to focus on executing and promoting legal sports betting properly to safeguard customers and guarantee the practicality of legal markets to the ongoing hinderance of illegal operators," Miller included.

Among NFL fans, the New England Patriots are the favorite to win the Super Bowl (23 percent), followed by the Kansas City Chiefs (8 percent), Dallas Cowboys (7 percent) and New Orleans Saints (6 percent).

- Since the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act-the stopped working federal restriction on sports betting-in May 2018, more than $10 billion has been bet on sports.
Thirteen states now use legal, regulated sports wagering, with five more states and the District of Columbia poised to open legal markets in the coming months.
- Last September, an AGA research study showed that the NFL stands to gain $2.3 billion each year from legalized sports betting, largely due to increased fan engagement.
- AGA's Sports Betting Consumer Study discovered sports wagerers are more thinking about the NFL than any other professional sports league (93 percent interested).
Methodology Morning Consult conducted this poll online between Aug. 7-12, 2019 amongst a nationwide sample of 11,001 American grownups. The data were weighted to approximate a target sample of grownups based upon age, instructional attainment, gender, race and area. Results from the complete survey have a margin of mistake of +/- 1 percent.
