Alberta Sports Betting Poised for another Oilers' Postseason Bump

Connor McDavid's continuous success most likely kept the sports wagering organization in Alberta pretty brisk this spring, whether that wagering was done using the sole provincially controlled alternative or elsewhere.

- Another substantial Edmonton Oilers' playoff run is most likely sending out plenty of company to the province's only authorized online sportsbook, Play Alberta, as well as to its non-provincially regulated competitors.

  • However, provided the current passage of iGaming legislation in Alberta, this might be the last Stanley Cup Playoff where Play Alberta is the Western Canadian province's only authorized online sportsbook.
  • A brand-new competitive iGaming market might go live in Alberta before next year's NHL Playoffs and consist of several provincially-regulated operators.

The Edmonton Oilers are set to square off once again versus the Dallas Stars Wednesday night in the opening game of the NHL's Western Conference Final.

The match is likely to drive even more wagering towards Alberta's only authorized online sportsbook, Play Alberta, in addition to its unregulated rivals.

This is, nevertheless, also establishing to be the last Oilers' playoff run where Play Alberta is the only entity licensed to use online Alberta sports wagering.

Bill 48, the Act, was gone by the provincial legislature earlier this month and received Royal Assent recently.

The legislation, which lays the legal foundation for a competitive market for online sports betting and gambling establishment gaming, now needs only to be announced into effect by the provincial government.

Bill 48's passage and remarks the province's iGaming minister made recommend the brand-new competitive market and the several private-sector operators that will inhabit it might go live by the first quarter of 2026. In other words, right in time for next year's Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The NHL Playoffs have been great in the past for the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), the public-sector entity that owns Play Alberta, the sole online gambling platform the province presently controls.

Last June, with the Oilers heading into a Stanley Cup Final they would ultimately lose, the AGLC reported Play Alberta "continues to see tremendous interest in hockey markets" from regional bettors.

" There's a fever pitch going on in the city," said Dan Keene, vice president of gaming for the AGLC, in an interview with Covers. "Many Albertans have gotten on the Oilers and we continue to see a lot of action."

    Two minutes well worth it

Another year came and went ever since, and Play Alberta is still the only provincially licensed online betting platform in the province. And another Oilers playoff run is again driving organization to the platform, according to the AGLC.

A spokesperson informed Covers that 51% of all Stanley Cup futures were on Edmonton to win outright this year, up from about 40% in 2024.

The AGLC has continued to update the Play Alberta platform as well, including releasing a mobile app for users.

Those improvements are likewise helping Play Alberta compete against its unofficial competition at the moment. These so-called "grey market" operators may be regulated abroad or outside the province, however not by Alberta itself.

Moreover, if Play Alberta is getting a bump in service because of the Oilers, its non-provincially regulated competitors are likely seeing the same.

However, Alberta prepares to regulate private-sector online sportsbook and gambling establishment wagering site operators, some of which might currently take bets from Albertans.

When that happens, and Bill 48 will help make it happen, this formally puts Play Alberta in competition against other provincially authorized operators. Exactly the number of remains to be seen, however province will enforce no limit.

    ' Preyed' by grey

This could make next year's NHL playoffs a a lot more important affair for Play Alberta, which might be one of possibly numerous provincially controlled choices for gamblers.

Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally, Bill 48's sponsor, noted during dispute on the expense in April that Play Alberta contributed around $235 million to the province's basic fund the previous year, up more than $42 million from the previous year.

" As you may imagine, some of that spike was the outcome of the extra organization brought by the Edmonton Oilers' fun and interesting playoff run all the method to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup," Nally told his fellow legislators.

    - Launch TBD -18+.

  • centralized self-exclusion

Alberta Introduces Bill to Allow New Sports Betting, iGaming Sites https://t.co/I9AU1nsJNj@Covers!.?.! Nally, however, went on to detail among
the main reasons that Alberta desires to introduce a competitive iGaming market, which is that Play Alberta might only represent roughly 45% of the province's online gaming activity. It's possible Play Alberta's market share is even lower than 45
% too. Testimony to an Alberta legal committee last November recommended the platform's share could be in the ballpark of 30% to 40 %of online betting in the Western Canadian province.
