New Jersey Lawmaker Reverses Course on Sweepstakes Gaming, Seeks Ban Of Unregulated Wagering

A New Jersey lawmaker has reversed course on sweepstakes video gaming.

Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese just recently filed costs A5447 requiring a restriction on the controversial online social casinos and sportsbooks less than two months after proposing legalization.

Calabrese's most current bill desires to "forbid sweepstakes model of wagering" and establish "new charges for illegal betting operations and practices." The legislation also requires the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and Division of Gaming Enforcement to enforce those penalties.

In January, Calabrese presented A5196, a bill that designated "sweepstakes casinos as internet gaming" with license, oversight, and taxation requirements equal to the legal iGaming that New Jersey currently allows and manages.

Under fire

Sweepstakes video gaming varies from traditional online casinos and sportsbooks in that it offers totally free coins to play games. Additional coins can be acquired and exchanged for money and prizes on slots, table games, and sports wagering.

These operators, like McLuck, Chumba Casino, and High 5, aren't controlled or taxed in legal and illegal U.S. betting jurisdictions.

The market has actually taken off over the last few years with income price quotes in the U.S. alone reaching $6.9 billion in 2025.

Also to as social gambling establishments, sweepstakes companies' effect has mainly gone unnoticed by legislators and regulators. However, last year, the American Gaming Association, a U.S. trade industry group for sportsbooks and iGaming operators, asked states to examine their laws and figure out whether sweepstakes business are running legally.

The Indian Gaming Association has openly decreed that sweepstakes video gaming is unlawful and has asked state Attorney Generals to do something about it. The IGA argues that unregulated, untaxed gambling cash is going to social gaming companies that need to be going to people and industrial operators.

Doing something about it

The Garden State is one of 7 U.S. jurisdictions with legal iGaming. It currently has almost 30 certified online gambling establishment and poker operators and more than a lots mobile sportsbooks.

A New Jersey resident filed a claim against several sweepstakes gaming business, including McLuck, High 5, Wow Vegas, and CrownCoins, for operating illegally. Apple and Google were likewise named for supporting illegal betting platforms.

New Jersey isn't the only state considering a stance on sweepstakes gaming. On Monday, the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee passed a Maryland bill that would prohibit social operators in a non-iGaming legal state by a vote of 13-0.
