Florida Sheriff Taken Away in Handcuffs On Racketeering Charges

A Florida sheriff was detained over charges he orchestrated a huge illegal betting operation, raking in countless dollars at the same time.

Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, 44, has been implicated of using his badge to shield a an illegal betting empire that district attorneys say brought in more than $21.6 million in dirty money.

Florida Attorney General Of The United States James Uthmeier revealed the charges in a declaration saying: 'This is a solemn day for Florida and our police community. We put fantastic rely on our constitutional officers, particularly those who are our communities' first line of defense. Public servants must never ever make use of the public's trust for individual gain.'

Busted: Florida constable Marcos Lopez was taken into custody on allegations he managed a prohibited gaming operation

Lopez now faces two first-degree felony counts: racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering.

According to district attorneys, the sheriff played a 'complex role' in broadening and protecting the illegal operation, personally benefiting through project contributions and secret payments.

Lopez's fall from grace is even more disconcerting considering his background. Born in Chicago and raised in Central Florida, he joined the Osceola County Sheriff's Office in 2003 while serving in the Navy Reserve.

He later on made a partner's degree in criminal justice and increased through the ranks to end up being sheriff in 2021, making history in the procedure as the county's first Hispanic constable

Lopez was re-elected in 2024, but his 2nd term hardly got underway before the investigation got underway.

In custody: Now scheduled into the Lake County Jail without bond, Lopez deals with an arraignment hearing set for June 30

If convicted, he could deal with decades behind bars.

The scandal became public on Wednesday, when Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) representatives, supported by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), dove in and arrested Lopez.

In a video posted by HSI Tampa, representatives can be seen approaching the constable as he asks, 'What is this about?' before being handcuffed and led away.

Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated: 'Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, no one is above the law - consisting of public officials.'

Illegal operation: Prosecutors say the sheriff played a 'multifaceted role' in broadening and securing the illicit wagering ring

Governor Ron DeSantis also lost no time, issuing an executive order suspending Lopez from office.

In swift a response, DeSantis designated Florida Highway Patrol Central Region Chief Christopher Blackmon, a 35-year law enforcement veteran, to act as interim constable.

'He has actually humiliated himself, his family, and the great males and females who operate at the Osceola County Sheriff's Office,' stated Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. 'His conduct is outrageous, less than professional, and certainly corrupt.'

Attorney Mark NeJame, who has long criticized Lopez, included: 'It's terrible when any public official is implicated of criminal offenses and jeopardizing the very individuals and laws they are testified safeguard. Sadly, I can not state that I marvel with this most current accusation.'

In a joint statement following his arrest, Romanucci, Stephen Weil, Sam Harton, and Albert Yonfa said: 'Sheriff Lopez's arrest on racketeering charges is more evidence of a deeply rooted culture of illegal habits from the very top of the Osceola County Sheriff's Department. The charges show he was parading as a severe law enforcement officer while instead engaging in illegal habits.'

Background: Lopez was born in Chicago and raised in Central Florida. He originally signed up with the US military when he was only 17 and completed 22 years of service

The examination into Lopez's supposed criminal empire started in 2023 and has exposed a twisted web of corruption.

The prohibited business, according to investigators, ran lottos and slot devices throughout Lake and Osceola Counties.

Prosecutors state Lopez not only safeguarded the operation but advanced its interests after taking office in 2021.

'As law enforcement, we are held to higher standards of stability and character than other professions,' said FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass. 'This case exposed that Lopez broke the trust and integrity anticipated of him as the properly chosen sheriff.'

More arrests are expected in the coming days as private investigators unwind the full level of the gaming network.

Osceola County Manager Don Fisher stressed that the county had no role in the investigation, but stated it 'stands all set at the helm' to support Interim Sheriff Blackmon and the constable's department throughout this troubled duration.

In the wake of the arrest, Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa and City Manager Mike Steigerwald appeared on Facebook Live, with Espinosa calling it 'a disturbing moment' for the community.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood included: 'The allegations, if real, are extremely severe and disturbing, and undermine the honor and stability of every law enforcement officer who uses the badge.'
